Packing can be a daunting task when moving house. Of course James & Co can do all the packing for you but should you wish to do it yourself here are some helpful hints to make your move easier. Remember - correctly packed items are less likely to break in transport!
The dinning room table is a good work bench. Cover with a thick blanket to protect its surface; this will also prevent breakages if anything happens to tip over. Usually everything is within easy reach from here.
Always try and use cartons and packing material supplied by the removalist. Boxes designed for moving house are stronger than normal boxes and have double walls to prevent tearing and damage to your belongings. We can supply you with a wide range of cartons to pack almost anything.
Pack your non-essential items first and leave the essentials until last. Start with the delicate articles.
Form the carton then tape sufficiently across and along the joint with a strong parcel tape.
Use smaller cartons for heavy items such as books, tinned foods, tools, etc. and larger cartons for general purpose items. Avoid packing the carton too tight or heavy - 15kg max
Layer the bottom of carton with crushed white paper as cushioning (approx 5cm). Place 1 tier of wrapped articles and then apply more paper as cushioning (abother 5cm). Repeat this process until the carton is full. Before sealing the carton fill in empty spaces on the sides and top to ensure optimum safety.
After sealing the carton along and across the joint, with a permanent marker clearly label the carton with its contents and room destination. Ensure you write appropriate warnings if it requires special handling, eg. "FRAGILE GLASSES. TOP LOAD"
Everything travels better if packed properly so if it fits into a carton then pack it in one! Plastic garbage bags are not a good way of packing items. If its too big for a carton then leave it - your removalist should have felt padding on board to handle these items.
White paper is normally used to protect items in cartons - newspaper will create more work for you when unpacking as it soils and stains the items you have wrapped. Towels, blankets, and linen are good for wrapping fragile items before placing in cartons (especially larger items). Pillows and cushions are good for extra padding and optimum safety as are bubblewrap, tissue paper, and crushed paper.
Plan your prepacking well in advance - it's much easier to pack a few cartons daily rather than a whole household overnight.
For easy quick-find, start packing room by room and avoid mixing items from other places. Set an area in each room to stack your cartons and avoid congestion if possible. Keep cartons sealed and upright.
Things accumulate over time - NOW is a good opportunity to sort out any unwanted items so you aren't paying for their transport and disposal later.
Avoid thrills and spills - seal any opened articles before packing.
Have ready for quick access such items as medication, food, a spare set of clothes, telephone numbers, tea & coffee, etc. for when needed.
